Last year, Riley Mae was obsessed with Moana, so I was determined to give her the party she wanted. To say I went over the top with the decorations + blow up slide + snow cone truck, is an understatement, but what can I say… I love a good themed party!
Birthday’s in the Holifield house seem to be jinxed. I swear, there’s always something crazy going on!
When I was walking out the door to have Riley (I had a scheduled induction) I missed a step and fell down the stairs, resulting in a broken ankle. No joke!
Eighteen hours of labor + pitocin + a broke ankle… JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL!
On her first birthday, she broke out in a horrible rash, that spread rapidly all over her body and landed us in the ER + lots of strong meds. It was awful seeing my baby in so much pain.
Her second birthday was at the Zoo, and surprisingly went pretty good!
No one was injured! PTL!
Then her third birthday happened, and we’ll never look at a blow up slide the same way again.
My girl loved slides. The bigger the better, in her eyes! So I did what any Mom would do, and ordered the biggest one I could find. I even managed to have it delivered before she woke up, so we could play on it before her party.
She woke up, we took her outside, and she cried when she saw it! (enter sad face here) I told her she loved the one at the festival we attended in the Fall, and this one was just like it.
She still wasn’t feeling it!
I got the bright idea to take her on the slide with me, even though she was kicking and screaming.
I put her in my lap, told her it was going to be fun, and down we went.
**Parents..please learn from my mistake!! Apparently sliding down a slide with a child in your lap is the #1 one cause of a leg break. Why no one told me this, I’ll never know, but I had to learn the hard way!***
We got to the bottom and she was painfully screaming. My husband ran to us and grabbed her to see what was wrong. It was then we noticed Riley couldn’t put any pressure on her leg.
After about 15 minutes of her crying non stop and still not being able to stand on it, we decided to take her to Urgent Care to have it checked out.
After an exam, xrays + me wanting to crawl in a hole a die after explaining what happened 20 times, the Dr. came in and told us what I was praying wouldn’t come!
“Mrs. Holifield, you broke your daughter’s leg.”
Just kidding, she didn’t say that, but let’s be real… that’s basically what happened. And by the judgy look she AND my husband gave me, that’s basically what I heard! ha!
So they wrapped her up in a cast, until we could get in with the orthopedic Dr, and sent us on our way.
We still had the party, because let’s be honest… I spent way too much to cancel it, and my poor baby just wanted to sit on the couch the entire time. It’s def something we laugh about now, but it really was rough.
Don’t even get me started on the Mom guilt! That was absolutely awful!
I think Riley will always be scarred from it, and she has no shame in telling people that her Mom broke her leg on her birthday! (insert eye roll emoji here) So this year, we’re playing it safe and super low-key!
Mama needs a win!
We’re celebrating at Chick-fil-a with friends + nuggets + cake + and hopefully no injuries!
Please Lord let there be no injuries!
Anyways, if you’re looking for some inspiration for a Moana themed birthday, here’s some more pictures from our party from hell!
Even though she was put through the ringer, my sweet girl still had a smile on her face!
A couple of weeks ago, she asked if we could watch Moana (she wanted nothing to do with it after her party), so we’ve made tremendous progress over the past year! haha!
