Today we’re talking about all my tips + tricks when trying on clothes. Believe it or not, I loathe going to stores and shopping for clothes. It never fails that they don’t have what I want. Or that it looks awful on me, when I try it on. Since I started this blog, I’ve changed the way I go into all my try on sessions, and now I enjoy it a little more.
Below I’ll let you in on some changes I’ve made, to make sure I don’t regret a purchase. I still think there’s nothing better than shopping online, but the hassle of returning things isn’t always the best option.
The first change I made was spending a little time on myself, before I left the house. Lauren pre blog, would throw her hair in a bun, brush her teeth, slap on some face moisturizer and roll out in the slouchiest clothes. I mean, who gets dressed up to go shopping, right? Well, fast forward to now. These days I actually brush my hair (throw a curl or two in there), put on some makeup and wear presentable clothes. It’s amazing how spending a little time on yourself, makes your day feel like it goes a bit better!
If I know I’m shopping for a certain item (which I normally know exactly what I’m looking for), I’ll make sure I bring along items I already own to go with it.
Examples….
- Never wear a sports bra. You’re not getting an accurate idea of what a top will look like when you have pancake boobs. #realtalk I can’t tell you how many times I wore a sports bra to try something on, and when I wore it with a normal bra, it looked awful!! Learn from my mistakes!
- If you know you’re going for a dress, bring along some versatile shoes to go with it. You know, the tan ones in your closet that you can wear with anything… YEP! those.
- Same with your jeans. If you need some to go with a certain pair of shoes, bring or wear those shoes with you shopping. If they happen to be uncomfortable shoes, throw them in your purse and slap them on when you’re in the dressing room.
- Jewelry. You all know I love a good statement piece, and believe it or not, I bring jewelry to my try on sessions. This one is honestly for the gram, though. Plus it helps y’all see how you can pair some of my faves with different outfits.
- Tops. If you’re searching for the perfect top, bring along the bottoms that you know you’ll wear with it. You can also bring along a strapless bra, because now days it’s impossible to find normal shirts. (insert eye rolling emoji here)
Some of these things might sound crazy. I’m sure if you told me this before I started blogging, I would have looked at you like you had four heads. But now that it’s my new norm, I actually (sometimes) enjoy shopping. I also, no longer get home and hate the way something looks on me. I’m sure looking decent when I try it on helps with that. And now, I actually wear the item because I love it! (opposed to it hanging in my closet with a tag still in place)
Taking a picture actually helps, too. If you’re like me, sometimes in my head I look a lot better than I seem. HA! Snapping a quick pic helps me see what I really look like in the outfit. And sometimes, it ain’t pretty!
Hopefully someone thinks this post is helpful. Like I said… before blogging, I shopped while looking like a hot mess! Not that there’s anything wrong with looking a hot mess, trust me… sister has her days. This routine just helps me to not make a bad purchase.
I hope everyone has a great week! I’ll post some dressing room pics below so you can see some of my recent try ons.
xoxo- Lauren
